Maternal
and Child Health Care Workshop in Shanghai
An
International Course on Maternal and Child Health Care was organized
at Shanghai, China from May 28 to June 11th 2007 by China Training
Centre (CTC) for Reproductive Health and Family Care with assistance
from Partners in Population and Development (PPD). The workshop
was attended by 40 senior and mid-level officials working in the
field of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) including Sexual and Reproductive
Health (SRH) from 21 developing countries of Asia, Africa, Middle-East
and Europe.
The
objective of the workshop was to support the institutional development
of Reproductive Health Services Delivery Facilities in the developing
countries.

In
addition to lectures, Mr. Hu Hongtao, Deputy Director General, Department
of International Cooperation, National Population and Family Planning
Commission (NPFPC) of China presented a paper on MCH and Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) - With reference to China’s experience.
For the transfer of knowledge, experiences and expertise, participants
presented papers on the MCH situation and programs in their country.
Dr. Shariful Islam, Program Officer PPD made a presentation on PPD
in the workshop.
The
workshop covered topics of latest development in the field of MCH
and also provided opportunity for the participants to visit the
MCH programs of several academic and research institutes in Shanghai
and Taicang.
Consultative
Meeting on Capacity Development
A
Consultative Meeting on Capacity Development was organized by PPD
with assistance from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 18-19 June 2007. The meeting was attended
by international experts and consultants in the field of Reproductive
Health, Population and Development and representatives from UNFPA
and PPD Partner Institutions. The objective of this meeting was
to discuss

Matiur Rahman (Rtd), PPD Board Member and the Honourable Adviser,
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of
Bangladesh, underscored that the countries in the South have
lots of successful experiences, expertise and know-how which
need to be identified, scaled-up, shared and exchanged through
capacity building to meet the emerging needs of the countries.

support and assistance that the Honourable Advisor has extended
to PPD to address the burning issues of reproductive health,
population and development in the region through South-South

Participants

The
experts reviewed and discussed the contents of the modules at the
meeting. The following discussions also took place during the meeting
- Institutionalization
of the modules,
- Strengthening
partnership through capacity building of partner institutions,
- Initiating
expanded programs in order to bridge the gaps between the needs
and capacities of partner institutions of member countries,
- Resource
mobilization, and
- Initiating
facilitation to complement partner institutions through their
own existing potentials and resources.
Consultative
Meeting on Strategic Policy Development
APPD
in collaboration with UNFPA, organized a “Consultative Meeting
on Strategic Policy Development” from 20 to 23 June 2007 in
Dhaka, Bangladesh. The objective of the meeting was to analyze the
findings of the needs and priority assessment of PPD member countries
and develop a 4 year Strategic Business Plan for PPD from 2008-2011.

The
meeting brought together eminent international experts in the filed
of Reproductive Health, Population and Development from USA, Thailand,
China and Indonesia, a senior representative from UNFPA-New York
and PPD Secretariat Staff.
PPD
is in the process of developing a four year Strategic Business Plan
for 2008-2011. A Needs Assessment has been undertaken by PPD in
all the member states, and following an analysis of the findings
PPD is developing a Framework for concerted and meaningful action
for the coming four years. These will be shared with Board members
and Partner Country Coordinators for inputs, after which the draft
will be shared and discussed at the Board Meeting scheduled to take
place in Islamabad on the 8th November 2007.
